Support the Little Outdoor Libraries Project
What is a little Outdoor Library?
In its most basic form, a Little Outdoor Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another to share. It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors can share their favorite literature and stories.
Who Benefits?
It is a goal of 2nd Story Associates and the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara to promote literacy among low-income youth residing in Public Housing. Many families lack the ability to purchase books for their children. In fact, 61% of low income families have no books at home for their children. By placing Little Free Libraries at our family developments, children residing at these properties will gain access to an array of literature.
The Goal…
We hope to partner with the local community to design and build “little libraries” at our Public Housing developments. The libraries will be located outdoors so that books can be accessed easily by both children and adults. Bringing this concept to fruition would not only promote literacy among our youth, but would also deepen the sense of community among neighboring families.
